10 minute zipper pouch

The Easiest Zipper Pouch for Beginners!

I just bought a new purse and as much as I love it, it's not the best purse to organize all my lotions, hand sanitizers, and chapstick with because it's just one large open space. My previous purse had several different compartments that I could utilize for organizing all my different items, but not this one. I realized I needed a new pouch to store all my extras inside so they weren't just getting lost in the bottom of my purse in the land of darkness. So I went to my fabric stash, found two coordinating fabrics, and got to work. It really took me all of 10 minutes to make. It really is that easy! For anyone with basic sewing skills, you can whip this bag up in any color, size, and pattern in no time.

Materials needed:

1. Two coordinating fabrics- I used quilting cotton but you could use a heavier-duty fabric like a cotton duck, canvas, or anything that will give the bag some structure without being too rigid. You don't need too much. I used two fat quarters.
2. Coordinating zipper- Be sure your zipper is longer than however long you want to make your pouch. I made mine about 8x6 and my zipper was 8 inches long.
3. You also need basic sewing supplies- scissors, sewing machine, thread.

Instructions:

First, take your two coordinating fabrics and cut them to the dimensions you want to make your bag. I made mine about 8x6. So I cut four squares this size. (Shown below.)

Next, take your zipper and align it on top of the outer fabric with the zipper face down on the fabric as shown below.

Then, take the inner fabric and lay it on top. be sure to face the patterned side down, if there is one. You are "sandwiching" the zipper in between the layers, so to speak.

Next, pin it in place and be sure you have a zipper foot on your machine. Then, sew along this line...

I pulled back the fabric to show how it should be placed, but you want to enclose the entire zipper in your stitching.  The picture below is what you should get.

Now, open up the layers. It should look like this.

Do the same thing with the other two pieces of fabric to the other side of the zipper. If it's layered correctly, you should wind up with four pieces of fabric all stacked on top of each other. As shown below. Sew to the zipper like before.

Now, flip the inner fabric to one side and the outer fabric to another side and unzip the zipper a few inches. We're almost done!

Once you have your zipper unzipped a few inches (this is essential for turning the bag right side out at the end). Pin in place (inner fabric to inner fabric and outer fabric to outer fabric, and sew around the outside edge of the whole bag.

Once that's done, it's time to turn your bag! I show in the video below how to do this.

Once your bag is turned out, sew the opening shut and you're all done! So "sew" easy!
